In Sunnyvale, the weather is always nice and sunny. But in winter, the rain and light freezing of temperatures may be causing damage to your pavement surfaces without you knowing.
The great news here, is that asphalt is easy to maintain and repair, unlike other surfaces such as concrete. In this article I’m going to explain the reasons why asphalt is a superior surface to concrete.
And no I’m not being biased…asphalt is simply great for many situations that call for a low cost, easy to maintain surface.
With that said, there are many situations that call for concrete as a better surface. Areas that require extra load bearing capacity and structural strength benefit more from a concrete pavement.
Such is the example of an apartment complex we were working on the other day in Fair Oaks Ave, Sunnyvale, CA.
I recommended to the owner that concrete is the best option for the trash enclosure area… and you ask why is so?…well because the trash enclosure area is a special area that gets BEATEN UP! often by the frequent maneuvers of the garbage truck.
As you know, the loud heavy truck that carries all the trash it collects from the bins is not only heavy, but it tends to drop the bins in place at the same location week after week.
And you know what this leads to??? yes you guessed it!
Costly pavement repairs for you!
Ugh!
I understand your pain. That’s why remember to always try to make a budget to pave with concrete the trash enclosure area.
Now, you probably don’t want to pave the whole parking lot with concrete.
Why?
Because concrete is very expensive!!!
That’s where asphalt comes in. Asphalt is relatively cheap compared to concrete. Unlike concrete, when asphalt is damaged, you can easily mend it and repair it.
But when concrete is cracked or damaged… there’s no cheap repair other than excavating the damaged slab and replacing.
It’s not very cost efficient.
That’s why asphalt is very popular. When you have a pothole or a crack developing, you don’t have to remove the whole entire slab or square. All you need to do is to cut/excavate around the damage. Then patching with new material…and that’s it!
So there you have it. Asphalt is cheap, easy to repair, fast to install.
